References to laughter’s’ benefits go back as far as Plato (424-348 BC), who wrote that comedy blends pain with pleasure; and the Bible,
“Laughter is the Best Medicine”; a renowned phrase popularized by Readers Digest - recognizes the benefits of laughter, mirth, glee, and joy on the physical, mental, and social aspects of our lives. References to laughter’s’ benefits go back as far as Plato (424-348 BC), who wrote that comedy blends pain with pleasure; and the Bible, in Proverbs 17:22 – “A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones”.
The therapeutic aspect of laughter offers a correlation between stress and illness. The chronic stress of the Fight or Flight response maintains higher levels of cortisol (a stress hormone) over long periods of time. This stress leads to unhealthy habits such as smoking, overeating, and lack of exercise – all major risk factors for heart disease and other illnesses. Using laughter to divert our focus towards less stressful, more positive pursuits promotes the release of “happy hormones” that relieve pain, improve mood, and reduce the harmful effects of stress.
This can provide what Allen Klein, author of “Healing Power of Humor”, calls a “mini-vacation” from your troubles – allowing a mental clarity for processing issues and making decisions.
